Your Guide to Outdoor Tiles

With the warmer weather coming, it’s a good time to start thinking about how you’re going to landscape and style your outdoor spaces. If you’re considering a major makeover, consider outdoor tile. It’s durable and can offer a wide selection of looks and feels.

If you’ve never thought about tiling your back patio, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Consider our climate

Ceramic tile is okay for a sheltered, low-traffic outdoor space. If you go this route, remember to check that it’s rated for outdoor use. Slate — a high-end natural stone — is a great option if you want a natural look, although these and other natural stones tend to have a higher price point, as much as $50 per square foot.

Porcelain is typically a more cost effective option. Is it not only durable but versatile, with options for finishes that fit any look — from wood, to textured patterns, shapes and colours. It also isn’t susceptible to water damage, so it never needs to be sealed, unlike granite or limestone.

That’s why porcelain works just as well outside as it does in your kitchen. Speaking of which…

You can use it to transition spaces

Some of the most beautiful outdoor living spaces involve a transition from indoors. Matching or coordinating our outdoor flooring with your interior design can create this effect and expand the appearance of your indoor space.

However, just bear in mind that outdoor porcelain tiles are typically thicker and have an added texture to reduce the risk of slipping. Even if you’re choosing other stone, make sure it’s recommended for outdoor use.

You can still have fun with patterns

Mosaic tiles are a great way to add some flair to your outdoor patio, particularly if your outdoor decor is understated. You could also do larger geometric designs, a checkerboard pattern, pebble tiles, porcelain that mimics reclaimed wood — the list goes on. Just think about what will best complement your home’s design.

Lighting matters a lot

Typically, brighter, well lit outdoor areas should get a darker tile shade to soften the effect of the lighting, while spaces with less natural light can be brightened by choosing a lighter tile shade.
