The size of your tiles can do wonders to alter the perception of any room. With the right size tiles, small rooms can be made to appear more spacious, and large rooms can be made to seem cozy.

Larger tiles will help the room seem bigger. Since larger tiles take up more space, other components in the room, like your furniture and fixtures, will appear more spaced out due to the size in comparison to the tiles. Grout lines are also key players in making a room seem larger since they have an amplifying effect, where it highlights the size of the tile and large space that it covers.

However, the effect of larger tiles will not be as pronounced in smaller spaces like a small bathroom or cloakroom. Small areas can appear larger with the right size tile but be careful to get the proportions right. If the tile is too large, it can overwhelm a room. Consider a tile too large when there are too many undersized cuts (less than a half tile) needed to make it fit the room. If this is the case, it’s time to downsize your tile size.

Small tiles will make a room seem smaller. Large spaces are often more likely to seem barren or plain. Smaller tiles can help offset that effect. Smaller tiles take up less space, making your furniture and fixtures appear larger in comparison. However, be sure to avoid very small tiles like mosaics and subway tiles, because this will increase your grout lines, which can make the space feel overwhelmingly busy. Instead opt for something like a 12” x 24” to create a cozier illusion to your space.

It is important to strike the right balance between the size of the room, the furniture and fixtures, and tile dimensions. At Trini Tile we have a great selection of premium imported tiles in many shapes and sizes. You are bound to find the perfect tile for your renovation needs.
